You must have heard many people telling that I have thyroid problem. Some people put on so much weight and tell I have thyroid problem. Let know about it details

what is this thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland situated in the throat region. Its shape is like a butterfly. There are two types of thyroid conditions that everyone should know: Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a condition where there is lesser secretion of thyroid hormones, and the person is slow in thinking, slow in work, gets tired very easily, and so on. When everything goes slow, the person tends to put on weight. Sometimes you may notice a swollen gland over the throat, called goiter.

All these are hypothyroid problems.

Hyperthyroidism problem:

On the other hand, Hyperthyroidism is a condition where there is more secretion of thyroid hormones, making everything fast. The person starts reducing weight, becomes anxious, restless, and everything in the body becomes rapid, creating problems. Out of these two, hypothyroidism is very common, especially in women.

Generally, when someone says they have a thyroid problem, most of the time it is hypothyroidism.

Here are a few things you can do to overcome hypothyroid conditions:

Foods to Avoid:

You should avoid certain kinds of foods containing goitrogens, and there are many common foods which contain goitrogens:

  • Soya products like tofu
  • Cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Peaches and strawberries
  • Peanuts

A person with hypothyroid conditions should totally avoid these foods because they are not conducive to this problem.

Foods to Consume:

There are certain foods that a person with hypothyroidism should consume. One of the causes of hypothyroidism is less iodine in your system. To have sufficient iodine, you should:

  • Consume more dairy products
  • Eat selenium-rich foods like sunflower seeds, brown rice, and yogurt
  • It is also important to eat four times a day.

Yoga Techniques

Yoga helps in releasing TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormones). TSH is released by the pituitary gland. Here are the asanas which not only increase the circulation of the thyroid gland but also help in activating the pituitary gland:

Bhujangasana: In Bhujangasana, you lift your head up and take it back, giving a stretch over the neck and compression over the back. This activates both places. Similarly, all back-bending asanas like Dhanurasana, Ustrasana, and Chakrasana help in the same way.

People with thyroid issues generally need more confidence and more energy. These asanas help increase energy and thereby increase confidence.

Sleep

Studies show that a lack of sleep causes hyperthyroidism, while too much sleep will cause hypothyroidism. Ideal sleep should be around seven to eight hours. This sufficient sleep will help in releasing T3 and T4 hormones.

Meditation

Stress is one of the main causes of all endocrine problems. The release of T3 and T4 is highly affected because of stress. Meditation really helps in calming down your mind and releasing tension.

What you should do:

  • Go for a walk in silence and spend some time with nature.
  • Learn to sit quietly in any meditative pose, spend time with yourself, and calm yourself down.
  • If your mind is too busy thinking, meditate on sound. Focus on certain sounds outside the world. Just focusing on sound will help your mind to calm down. This is called Nishpand Bhava.

Thyroid is a condition that can be overcome by lifestyle changes.
