State Fair Food: A Journey Through America’s Culinary Creations

Corn Dogs, Funnel Cakes, and More: A Taste of State Fair History

Corn dogs, funnel cakes—oh yeah, buddy! Cotton candy that dissolves in your mouth is super delicious. These are your grandpa\’s state fair foods from decades ago, offering a quaint bite of history that takes us back to a time when people were just beginning to push the limits of state fair food.

How State Fairs Have Evolved

Back then, state fairs were all about promoting agriculture. They showcased who had the most handsome pig or cow and celebrated rural life. You’d see things like a beef farm, a cow birthing farm, and even pig racing!

Over time, state fairs evolved. They added entertainment like games and rinky rides run by questionable carneys. But more than that, state fairs began to serve up over-the-top food creations you won’t find anywhere else. Applebee’s or Denny’s simply wouldn’t have the guts to serve up deep-fried Pop-Tarts!

Documenting Extreme State Fair Foods Across the Country

In this series, I’m on a mission to document the most incredible food innovations across the USA. I’ll start at the New York State Fair, where over 34,000 pounds of potatoes, mostly in the form of French fries, are sold each year.

One unique dessert I tried had a caramel injection. I thought they might use a syringe or a turkey baster, but then Josh molested my dessert.

Minnesota State Fair: A Meat Lover’s Dream

Next, we head west to the Minnesota State Fair, famous for every type of food you can imagine being found on a stick. For example, there’s a meat stick with a rice paper wrapper!

Washington State Fair: A 20-Day Extravaganza

Finally, we arrive at the Washington State Fair, a 20-day extravaganza where over 12,000 smoked turkey legs are gobbled up each year. If you don’t like hot Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, don’t get this one. It’s got a bag and a half of Cheetos on it!

Exploring Extreme Fair Foods

Innovative and Unhealthy Creations

I’ll be hunting down the most extreme, downright irresponsible inventions these vendors have created. For example, the Defibrillator—a sandwich where each ingredient is fried in hot oil—features a deep-fried PB burger, deep-fried bacon, deep-fried cheddar cheese, deep-fried cheese curds, and deep-fried pickles between two grilled cheese sandwiches.

Sweet Meets Savory

There’s also the Barbecue Split at Porky’s Pork Palace, where Banana Split ingredients are replaced with various smoked meats and a cherry tomato on top. It’s juicy and drenched in what she called a barbecue wash—I might use that as my new body soap!

If you like your sweets with a bit of protein, try the Twix wrapped in bacon and deep-fried. This is why we stay disciplined in midsummer so we can let it all go at the end of the summer.

Unique and Outrageous Foods

And if that wasn’t enough, how about a Korean cheese dog coated in Fruity Pebbles or Flamin’ Hot Cheeto dust? It’s a perfect mix of sweet and savory!
