In this post, we\’re taking on seafood along the USA\’s East Coast, from Maine to Miami.

This journey is filled with moments of perfection, all-you-can-eat buffets, and the joy of discovering more about the treasures of the deep that the East Coast has to offer.

I\’ve never had an entire crab—shell, legs, and all—in one go, especially in the US.

The fact that this is considered an American food gets me even more excited because it\’s certainly not something that most Americans have ever tried or even heard of.

This is about as weird as Maryland gets.

The East Coast: A Seafood Lover\’s Paradise why?

The USA\’s East Coast consists of over 2,000 miles of shoreline, stretching from the Canadian border to the southern tip of Florida.

Here, you\’ll find some of the country\’s most precious treasures of the deep.

These aquatic gems are tirelessly brought in by fishermen, no matter the time, the weather, or how seasick they might get.

From the ocean, the seafood changes hands to chefs around the country who take on the challenge of preparing what can be an incredibly rewarding type of food.

However, seafood also comes with its risks. Every year, there are some casualties, with people dying from eating improperly prepared oysters.

Home-Cooked Meals to High-End Dining

Our journey begins with the home-cooked meals of the Gullah on St. Helena Island, where the shrimp is distinct and special.

We then move on to the impressively expensive fine dining at a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Manhattan, where every ingredient is meticulously sourced and prepared.

In this series, I\’m on a mission to reveal how the USA\’s top seafood is sourced and how it gets to its final destination on your dinner table.

For instance, in Maine, lobsters are trapped in cages by hardworking lobstermen.

Each year, these waters just off the coast of Maine bring in over 100 million pounds of lobster, which is then shipped around the country and the world.

Maryland\’s Famous Blue Crabs

In Maryland, blue crabs are famous. Crabbers check hundreds of pots, hoping to cash in on this valuable crustacean. The meat is tediously plucked out by professional pickers and then stuffed inside meaty crab cakes.

If you\’re feeling more adventurous, soft-shell crabs can be fried up and eaten whole.

Virginia\’s Perfected Oyster Cultivation

In Virginia, farmers have perfected the craft of cultivating oysters.

This multi-year process means oyster seeds go from looking like specks to eventually growing into plus-sized oysters.

These oysters end up at restaurants near you, cooked up in ways you couldn\’t imagine.

In Richmond alone, one restaurant serves 307,000 oysters every year!

Florida: A Paradise for Seafood

Finally, we reach Florida, a paradise for all things seafood. Here, you\’ll find giant stone crab claws that could be worth up to $90 each.

Processing facilities boil giant containers of seafood, like a 400-pound basket of spiny lobsters, a creature that competes with the Maine lobster for the title of the USA\’s favorite seafood.

Throughout this journey, I don\’t just want to eat America\’s finest seafood; I want to show you where it comes from. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with fishermen who undergo backbreaking work, I aim to deliver you the perfect bite.

From Maine to Miami, our cross-country seafood journey is about to begin.

Of the entire trip, my favorite seafood experience was the blue crabs in Maryland. The sheer size and the process of picking the meat were fascinating.

The taste was incredible, and the experience of eating an entire crab, shell, legs, and all was truly unique. This was a standout moment that I\’ll never forget.
